A Relaxing Sunday: Driving the Derbyshire Dales

This Sunday, I decided to escape the usual routine and take a leisurely trip through some of the most charming countryside in the Derbyshire Dales. It turned out to be a day full of unexpected finds, scenic views, and local delights. Here's how it unfolded:

Alstonfield Car Boot Sale: A Morning of Treasure Hunting with a view

I kicked off the day with an early start at the Alstonfield car boot sale, beautifully set in an elevated position amidst the rolling hills of the Derbyshire Dales, perfect for a morning of casual browsing.

There were stalls loaded with an array of interesting items—vintage pieces, quirky antiques, and handmade crafts. It was great fun rummaging through the collections, and I managed to snag a few random items, including a some Bill Bryson CDs, coffee cups and a small globe of London! After exploring the stalls, I enjoyed a quick cup of tea while soaking in the fresh air and stunning panoramic views—an ideal way to start the day.

Wandering Through Wirksworth: A Village with Character

After wrapping up at the car boot sale, I headed over to Wirksworth as there was a particular location I had been wanting to visit for ages, but more of that in a minute...

This village has a real charm to it, with its mix of history and a bit of an artsy vibe. I took a slow walk around, popping into a few local shops and soaking up the atmosphere.

However the main purpose of the visit was to have a a look at the 'Stardisc'—this granite star chart is both an artistic piece and a guide to the night sky. Standing there, it was easy to lose track of time, just enjoying the peacefulness and the view.

Cromford Mill: A Step Back in Time

From Wirksworth, I made my way to Cromford Mill. This place is a slice of industrial history, with its recently restored waterwheel bringing a touch of the past to life. It was interesting to see how the mill operated and to imagine the hustle and bustle of its heyday. A gentle walk along the nearby Cromford Canal was a perfect way to wind down, with the calm water and greenery offering a serene escape.

Bentley Brook Brewing Co: A Well-Earned Pint

As the day started to wind down, I couldn't resist stopping by the Bentley Brook Brewing Co for a pint. The brewery has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and it was the ideal spot to take a breather. The beer was excellent—a great way to toast a day well spent.

Thornbridge Brewery Tap Room: More Craft Beer Goodness

On my way back, I decided to make one last stop at the Thornbridge Brewery Tap Room in Bakewell. It’s a great place if you’re into craft beer, with a wide selection to try. The tap room was buzzing with people enjoying their Sunday, and I joined them with a pint of one of Thornbridge's signature brews.

Tagg Lane Dairy: A Sweet Treat

To top off the day, I made a delightful detour to Tagg Lane Dairy. Known for having some of the best gelato in the area, I couldn't resist stopping for a taste. I opted for the maple syrup and pecan flavor, which was absolutely delicious.
